Bringing Walls Back to Life: Precision Painting & Restoration

This is the finished deck after restoring the rotted wood and the failed deck screws. Fifty per cent of the screws were rusted and had rotted heads. Every single screw had to be either reset deeper or replaced with new screws. I also found areas of rotted wood under the attached step leading from the exit door. Because it was not removable, collecting pine needles in between the step and door and had no weep holes, it collected water that promoted the rotten areas, as seen in the images.

After this process of repairing all rotted wood and screws was completed, it came time to sand and repair the failed painted deck surface. This is attributed to two failed attempts at coating the deck.

  1. When the deck was initially built, it was coated over pressure-treated wood that was not given sufficient time to cure and dry out. [This is why the new PT step and replaced under deck boards were left uncoated. They will be coated after appropriate curing time.]
  2. In a short two years later it was failing and was recoated without sufficient preparation of any failed areas.

This is how I found the deck and was able to start the restoration process.

I chose to apply two coats of Sherwin Williams Super Deck deck and dock coating. This product is designed for these types of situations. The paint adheres to failed edges with a heavy wet and dry film thickness. Two coats were applied within a 24 to 48 hour window to ensure adhesion between the coats. Any more time between coats would promote failure.
